Despite popular opinion, it is a fallacy to think that ticks aren’t a problem here in North Carolina. While we do not have nearly the amount of Lyme disease or deer ticks (the main vector of Lyme) as the Northeast, we have our own tick-borne diseases to worry about. According to the Tick-Borne Infections Council of North Carolina (TIC-NC), the most aggressive tick in the Piedmont is the Lone Star tick. This tick’s name has less to do with the “Lone Star State” of Texas than its nickname simply being because it is most recognizable from the single spot on its back. This tick, also known as Amblyomma americanum, is responsible for the transmission of ehrlichiosis, Southern Tick Associated Rash Illness (STARI, also known as the misnomer “Southern Lyme" ), Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), tularemia, tick paralysis, and possibly even Lyme disease and Babesiosis. (For more information about tick-borne illnesses in North Carolina, visit the North Carolina Health & Human Services website.)
Clearly, not only are ticks a problem here, but they can be a serious problem if one bites you or a loved one. Mosquito Squad of Wilmington, the most trusted name in mosquito control, also specializes in tick control. While we can’t promise you won’t get bitten by a tick while out on a hike or romping around the beach, as they love to hang out in seagrass, we can definitely keep you safe from them in your own backyard, where you spend the most time.
The same barrier treatment formula that we use for mosquitoes in your yard also eliminates up to 90% of ticks on contact. But ticks are nothing a regular person should mess with, so we go one step further with our Wilmington tick control to make sure that ticks never reach you while on your own property.
Just like our traditional barrier treatment, we first walk the perimeter of your yard and administer our specially-developed, EPA-registered formula on all the surfaces we can, save for flowers and other bee-pollinating plants. This includes foliage, trees, woodpiles, on and under decks, garden gnomes, you name it. This odorless, colorless solution dries in about 30 minutes, at which point your kids and pets can return to your yard. After it dries, this residual formula is now adhering to everything it was applied to. With this process, not only are we eliminating up to 90% of ticks and mosquitoes on contact but we’re preventing any eggs from hatching, plus any new “bad bugs” that come into contact with it, whether landing on a leaf or crawling over from a neighbor’s house, will also be eliminated. Our barrier spray is effective for three weeks before it wears off and needs reapplication.
But we don’t stop there.
Here’s where we basically turn your Wilmington tick control “up to eleven.” While not all ticks carry scary diseases, it’s impossible to tell until you’ve gotten bitten by a tick and then you start showing symptoms. That’s not really a chance anybody wants to take. So here at Mosquito Squad, we implement tick tubes, which are small, biodegradable tubes that we strategically place around your yard for mice and other small mammals to find. These tubes are stuffed with a treated cotton that the mice love to take back to their borrows to make them nice and cozy. The majority of nymph ticks feed on small animals such as these, so when one decides to take a bite, it is eliminated shortly afterward. This extra step that we take stops the tick life cycle and drastically lessens the chance of any ticks coming near you in your yard, with up to 90% effectiveness.
So that you don’t need to remember to make another appointment with us, we offer seasonal protection plans for mosquito and tick control. That way, it’s less worrying about getting bitten by any dangerous bugs and more time spent outside with family, friends, and pets during the summertime. No bugs. No bites. No kidding.
While all of Mosquito Squad’s products are EPA-registered, we understand that there are some people who prefer to not use synthetics and won’t settle for anything less than 100% “green.” Knowing this, we developed an all-natural formula based on essential oils that repels bugs rather than eliminate them. It has a slight botanical scent when we first apply it, but it wears off to the human nose after a couple hours. Many customers say it has a nice scent, but we know the bugs can’t stand it because most who choose this method report a reduction in yard pests between 65-80%. It’s also a time released solution, but because of its botanical makeup it wears off slightly faster than our traditional barrier treatment, so we recommend reapplication every two weeks instead of three.
As your authority in private mosquito and Wilmington tick control, we firmly stand behind all of our products and services. However if you’re not satisfied for any reason, please let us know. We’ll either give your property an additional treatment or offer your money back.
